What an amazing road trip today has been - we've seen so much and the weathers been lovely, blue skies & not too hot or too chilly like yesterday!

Koala!

it was Lees eagle eye that spotted this beauty in a eucalyptus tree close to the road, he was so sweet and just stared at me for a while before slowly climbing away.  unfortunate the light was behind him so they aren't the best photos but I was just so excited to finally see one in the wild; another magic moment first :)

Koala - born to be wild.

Koalas live solely on eucalyptus & can eat up to 1.5 leaves a day which is why they do not survive well in zoos outside of Australia.

South Australia - a very open & flat state, time for kangaroos then!

Having stocked up on fresh fruit & veg in Apollo Bay earlier today we were gutted to find out that you can't take said these items plus various other natural things such as plants & soil stuffs in to South Australia (we knew this was the case in Western Australia but thought this was the only state where it applies) so unfortunately having been unsuccessful in giving it to an Aussie man near the border:  'Nah mate, got nowhere to put it cause I'm on me way t'the pab', 40 dollars worth of tomatoes, bananas, asparagus & apples had to be binned! Oh well, you live & learn...

Wrong turn!

Sunset, SA

Having booked Coorong National Park for 2 nights, we drove through South Australia for at least 2 hours alongside the most incredible sunset, before seeing the first sign which my Google directions (courtesy of the National Park booking people) dutifully told us to ignore. By this point as we were behind schedule as usual it was getting dusk and we were getting nervous, well aware that dawn and dusk are the times to avoid the roads due to the amount of wildlife awake and active during these hours. As if reading our thoughts, two kangaroos jumped out in front of the lorry ahead, bouncing erratically as kangaroos do and causing us us to hold our breaths until thankfully they disappeared unharmed back into the bush. Already driving slowly we then pretty much crawled for the next 20km up the middle of the road as much as we could until Google gave us the instruction to turn off... only to be told to turn round and drive 40km back from whence we came!...aarrgghh!!

Just before we had turned off the road we noticed a (with hindsite, very strategically placed) Road House/caravan site (the only thing outside the national park for miles) opposite the junction so we turned round and headed for this. By the manager/owners  lack of surprise and eagerness to help by explaining the actual camp was 40 km back up the road (tho' he didn't sound quite as smug as Google) but we were welcome to stay at his park; we can only assume we're not the only ones to have been sent on a wild goose chase whilst looking for their Coorong camp in the dark! Although I had paid up front for 2 nights at the park, it was really cheap and not worth the risk of driving that distance again in even darker conditions, so we agreed to stay here the night instead with the promise of a proper breakfast in the morning :)  After trawling Google I am quite confident of the way to the camp now so we will try again in the morning or maybe just stay here another night, either way we'll decide tomorrow as it's been an amazing, busy & very long day!
